Dr Gloria M Alvarez, FCIArb, is a qualified Mexican lawyer and a leading academic in international arbitration. She is a dual Mexican and US national and holds both a master’s and a doctorate degree from the School of International Arbitration, Queen Mary University of London.

She is the founding partner of GM Arbitration, with a presence in Mexico City and London, where she serves as an independent arbitrator, arbitration secretary and expert in dispute resolution under various institutions, including ICC, ICSID, LCIA, and CANACO.

Dr Alvarez is an Associate Professor in Dispute Resolution and Energy Law at the University of Aberdeen in the United Kingdom and a Visiting Professor at the University of Lausanne (Switzerland) and Osgoode Hall Law School (Canada). She is a member of the steering committee for the Academic Forum for the UNCITRAL Working Group III and sits at the editorial board of ICSID Review and the Journal of International Arbitration.

Her notable publications include ICSID Practical Commentary, Energy Arbitration in Latin America and the Routledge Handbook on Energy Law. Her work has been quoted by national courts and international tribunals.

Since 2023, the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation has included Dr Álvarez in its list of ‘Mexican Women in Science’. She is also the co-founder of Arbitration Links, an initiative to promote free knowledge of international arbitration in Mexico. In 2024, Gloria was selected to take part in the prestigious ICC Academy for Latin America and the Special Editor on Energy Transition and Investment Arbitration for ICSID Review.
